  Do You Think Jehovah’s Witnesses Really Believe They Are Living In The Time Of The End?

  To be a JW, you have to be really good at believing in ideas that completely contradict/oppose each other all of the time.

  For instance: A friend of my MIL is 85 years old. She will tell you how horrible this system is -- the gays, Putin, Trump blablahblah. Worst time ever to be living. She will also tell you that the new system is just going to be so amazing. Can't wait.

  Funny thing is though, her heart is failing and instead of letting nature take its course and leaving this horrible, awful system behind and stepping into a panda-petter's paradise, she has travelled from Florida to NY several times to receive experimental treatment/operations for her heart condition. So does she really believe there is a new system? If she did, why would she be doing this to preserve her life in such an awful "system of things" for a couple years?

  So back to the OP: Do they really believe they are living in the time of the end? I honestly think the answer is both Yes and No at the same time.

  "This system will probably be over in about 5 years"

  i don't think i shared this story yet, it's strange and although i did a little detective work trying to figure out who said what and when i never found out much, big surprise, jehovah's witnesses love their secrets as we all know... but i thought other posters might find this interesting both in and of itself, because of what an elder told me one sunday back in 2011, and because of what it could imply as to high-ranking jehovah's witnesses prophesying the date of armageddon.

  specific dates went out the window in 1975, although governing body helper ken flodin hinted at 2040 in a talk uploaded to jw.org a couple years back, and the governing body hinted at 2034 in a watchtower back in the 90s.

  but it might be, just might, that more specific date-setting still goes on behind closed doors in certain circuits.... so after i went to "meetings" and talked to witnesses for a couple years at a rural congregation in the eastern united states an elder pulled me aside one service into the vestibule at the hall, in other words, into a private area where no one would overhear us.

  Individual JWs set dates because 1) it makes them feel good (e.g., proud they have "special knowledge" no one else has) and 2) they can do it for FREE!!! Making predictions doesn't cost anything.

  For instance, I remember my one BIL saying around the time of the 2014 RC ("Celebrating 100 Years of Kingdom Rule!") that this system COULDN'T POSSIBLY be around in 5 years. Whelp, it's now 2019, and this summer will be exactly 5 years from when he said this to me and my wife. . . so I guess there's still some time for his prediction to come true! And as noted above, saying this made him feel good ("I'm such a smart JW! I know something everyone else doesn't know") and his prediction cost him nothing. Will he be embarrassed when 2019 comes and goes without anything happening? Nope. Will he lose his shirt financially if nothing happens in 2019? I don't think so.

  So next time he makes a bold claim regarding the end of the world again, I think I'm going to call him on it.

  I can't do anything about #1 because he's way smarter and more spiritual than I am. But I could do something about #2.

  Next time he says "This system can't last another 5 years" I'm going to say "Cool. I'll buy into that. But let's do this: right now, let's go to a lawyer -- I'll pay -- and we'll draw up an agreement that will come due in exactly 5 years. At that time -- since the New System will be here and you won't have any need for the stuff -- I will take possession of your house, everything in your house, your business and all of your bank accounts. How does that sound?"

  Should calling someone 'Nazi' be made illegal?

  a rabble-rouser called james goddard and a crowd of pro-brexit people called anna soubry 'nazi' recently.. the same crowd also called owen jones a few names.. i don't know these people but they seem to be unsavory people - they were certainly not behaving themselves.. the met police are looking into the matter, to see if the crowd did anything illegal.

  a journalist asked the police officer if calling someone 'nazi' is illegal.

  the officer said 'that's what we're looking into'.. first, this crowd behaved badly, no question.. what i find fascinating, though, is the speed of response from authorities.. calling people fascist or nazi has been going on for decades.

  Artificial Intelligence and 2019

  i was intrigued by a forecast made by damo academy, the in-house technology and science research arm of china's, huge e-commerce business,, alibaba.. they seem to be predicting the following technology trends for 2019 and that artificial intelligence would continue to be the ho area of progress.. so what do any techies hanging out here think?

  Do elders still ask inactive members to write a letter to disassociating yourself from the Congregation?

  do today's elders ever meet with inactive members and pressure them to write a letter disassociating themselves from the congregation stating that, ''you no longer wish to a jehovah witness"?.

  i was baptized at the young age of 16. after turning 18, i stopped attending meetings, field service, and all jehovah's witness activities.

  i wanted to be with my high school friends, go to rock concerts, have a girlfriend, and live like a normal teen.
